1st Annual Social Work Conference 2024 Picture Highlights
CONCEPT NOTE
The social and economic complexities and challenges in Nigeria and the introduction of oil subsidy in the 70s and 80s was in response to trade imbalances occasioned by mismanaged oil windfall, which later became a marionette for Nigeria' socioeconomic development as a result of corruption, inflation and devaluation of the naira, failed leadership and governance structure, as well as undemocratic principles amidst the rising inflation.
Currently, the nation appears to be asphyxiated because of the policy of the oll subsidy removal on the 29th May 2023, which made life more complex and misery-driven, with high levels of suicide rates, family disorganization, psychosocial, emotional and mental problems, political upheavals and protests within the country.
These creates tension and vaults of social problems for social work practice interventions as very-day-life workers, especially as the government is pushing for a palliative-driven social and economic approach to address the lingering social problems and to foster social integration and a comprehensive social and economic policy reforms to engender national cohesion and development in the country.
The conference will provide platform for intellectual discussions on the effect of post subsidy removal on the socioeconomic wellbeing of the people and how best social workers as care givers and development workers can navigate through this era, midwifing robust social work practice and interventions.
The conference recommendations will form a modest approach to transformational socioeconomic welfare programming. policy advocacy and inclusivity for a sustainable national development.
